The most fundamental component of reducing overall violence and suffering in the world is to ensure freedom from captivity for all animals (including humans). To achieve this goal, no one should be allowed to hold captive any other animal, especially to breed them or to harm them at a latter time.

My Comment: Concerning cruelty to animals, I have been involved for many years with a special education school that has a permanent plus transitory residential population of about 300 animals (cf. http://www.greenchimneys.org). There are three categories, none of which treats animals cruelly, but nonetheless, they are captives, at least while at Green Chimneys:

1. Farm and other domesticated  animals that would most likely die quickly if released to the wild, as their survival skills have been bred out of them over the millennia.

2.  Wild, but either imprinted or otherwise disabled animals, who would be unable to survive if released to the wild.

3. Animals (mostly birds) that have been injured, who are rehabilitated and released into the wild as soon as they are deemed sufficiently healed to resume their lives in the wild.

We 'use' all three of these categories of animals as part of our human/animal education programs, as described at our website.
