An Open Letter to an Old Fart, from Another Old Fart
From: François Joinneau, Cherbourg, Normandy, France
To: Donald J. Trump, 47th President of the United States
Date: September 2025
Subject: A Nobel Peace Prize Worth Having
Dear Mr. President,
So you want a Nobel Peace Prize, dude. I get it. Every president dreams of that legacy moment - the one that makes them more than just another name in the history books.
But here's the thing: Destroying NATO won't help. Making online dissenters lose their jobs won't help either. Trust me on this one - I've been around long enough to know what actually works and what's just political theater.
We're all stuck in the same sinking world, okay?
Your country's got what - $40 trillion in debt soon? The developing world's drowning in $11 trillion of external debt. Europe's struggling with migration, climate change, and economic stagnation. China's facing a demographic cliff and economic slowdown. Russia's bleeding itself dry in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the planet's literally burning, institutions built in 1945 can't handle 2025 problems, and everybody's pointing fingers while the ship goes down.
Here's my proposal, from one old fart to another:
LET'S BUILD SOMETHING THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
The Diplomatic Regency
Forget the broken UN with its ridiculous vetoes. Let's create a Meta-Democracy where every elected official worldwide plus every PhD holder gets a vote. Real democracy, real expertise, real solutions.
What's in it for you? You become a founding father of the institution that replaces the UN. That's legacy material right there.
The Continental Union
The EU served its purpose - taming German nationalism. But now we need something bigger to handle Chinese and Russian power. A Continental Union spanning from Lisbon to Vladivostok (once Russia gets its act together).
What's in it for you? American leadership in creating the Western response to authoritarian blocs. Reagan would be jealous.
The Atlantic Union
NATO worked for the Cold War. But your voters are tired of paying for European defense, and Europeans are tired of depending on American politics. Let's build something new - an Atlantic Union where burden-sharing actually makes sense.
What's in it for you? You solve the "America First" vs "Alliance responsibilities" problem in one move.
The Climate Debt Revolution
Here's the big one, the game-changer, the oxygen we all need:
We take your $40 trillion debt, add the developing world's $11 trillion debt, and convert the whole mess into Climate Debt. Instead of paying Wall Street, countries pay by building solar farms, planting forests, and developing green technology.
What's in it for America?
• Debt burden becomes investment in American green tech leadership
• Developing countries buy American clean energy instead of Chinese coal plants
• You become the president who solved both the debt crisis AND the climate crisis
• American workers get jobs building the future instead of fighting over the scraps of the past
What's in it for the world?
• We actually tackle climate change with the scale it requires
• Developing countries get the Marshall Plan they need
• Everyone stops arguing about who owes what and starts building what we need
THE NOBEL PEACE PRIZE YOU'RE LONGING FOR
Here's what I promise you, from another dude, from the other side of the Atlantic, and from the other side of the political spectrum:
If we implement this package - the Diplomatic Regency, the Continental Union, the Atlantic Union, and the Climate Debt transformation - you and I will both get that Nobel Peace Prize.
Think about it:
• You - the American president who created the post-UN world order
• Me - the French guy who came up with the framework
• Together - we prevented World War III and saved the planet
Not bad for a couple of old farts, right?
WHY THIS WORKS FOR YOUR VOTERS
"America First" Compatible:
• America leads the new institutions instead of being trapped in the old ones
• American debt becomes American investment opportunity
• American technology dominates the global green transition
• American workers build the infrastructure of the future
"Make America Great Again" Delivered:
• America creates the 21st-century equivalent of the UN, NATO, and Bretton Woods
• America solves problems that stumped every other generation
• America proves democracy can evolve and win
"Art of the Deal" Applied:
• You get institutional legacy, debt relief, and technological leadership
• Other countries get climate action, development funding, and democratic participation
• Everyone wins because the alternative is everyone loses
WHY THIS WORKS FOR THE WORLD
For Europe:
• Continental Union gives them the scale to compete with China and America
• Atlantic Union maintains transatlantic ties without dependence
• Climate Debt funds the green transition they desperately need
For Developing Countries:
• Debt relief tied to sustainable development
• Technology transfer accelerates their growth
• Democratic participation in global governance
For China and Russia:
• Pragmatic pathway to rejoin international community (once they're ready)
• Climate cooperation benefits everyone
• Democratic framework provides stability they actually need
THE BOTTOM LINE
Mr. President, you've spent your whole life making deals. This is the ultimate deal - the one that makes everyone better off, including you.
Your choice:
• Keep fighting yesterday's battles with yesterday's institutions and get yesterday's results
• Or build tomorrow's solutions with tomorrow's institutions and get a legacy that actually matters
I'm 55, diabetic, emphysemic, living on disability benefits in Normandy. You're 79, facing legal challenges, dealing with a divided country.
We're both running out of time to make our mark.
But if we do this right - if we build the Diplomatic Regency, create the Continental and Atlantic Unions, and implement the Climate Debt transformation - we don't just get Nobel Peace Prizes.
We get to be the guys who saved democracy and the planet.
Not a bad way for a couple of old farts to exit the stage, don't you think?
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
I'm heading to London soon to meet with Ukrainian and Taiwanese representatives. They're already interested in co-founding the Diplomatic Regency.
Your move, Mr. President.
You can keep trying to destroy institutions that are already broken, or you can build the institutions that will replace them.
You can keep fighting with allies who need you as much as you need them, or you can create new frameworks that work for everyone.
You can keep dealing with debt that's crushing your economy, or you can transform that debt into the investment that powers American leadership for the next century.
The Nobel Peace Prize you want? It's sitting right there, waiting for someone bold enough to grab it.
All it takes is recognizing that the old world is dying anyway, and the question isn't whether it changes - it's whether America leads that change or gets swept away by it.
Your call, dude.
Best regards from across the Atlantic,
François Joinneau

P.S. - I know this sounds crazy. But remember: every great deal starts with someone crazy enough to imagine it could work. The question is whether you're still that guy, or just another politician playing it safe while the world burns around us.
P.P.S. - Ukraine and Taiwan are already interested. Europe's desperate for new solutions. Even China's showing signs of pragmatic flexibility. The coalition is there, waiting for American leadership. Don't let someone else build the future you could have built.

The offer stands, Mr. President. Two old farts, one Nobel Peace Prize each, and a world that actually works.
